It Wasn’t the Trip I Expected, But It Became Even Better

First travel in Europe alone.
헝가리에서 일한 지 3개월쯤 되었을 때였다.
It had been about three months since I started working in Hungary.
문득 한국에 있을 때 받았던 소개팅이 생각났다.
One day, I suddenly thought about a blind date I had back in Korea.
상대는 로마에서 성악을 전공하던 사람이었고,
She was studying vocal music in Rome,
당시 우리는 농담처럼 이런 말을 했었다.
and at the time, we casually said something like this:
“나중에 유럽에서 한번 봐요.”
“Let’s meet in Europe someday.”
그때는 그냥 지나가는 말인 줄 알았다.
Back then, I thought it was just something people say.
근데 사람이 타이밍이 참 웃기다.
But life has a funny way of working sometimes.
헝가리 생활이 조금 익숙해질 즈음,
As I slowly got used to living in Hungary,
괜히 그 말이 계속 생각나서 다시 연락을 하게 되었고
I kept thinking about those words, so I reached out again,
결국 나는 로마행 비행기 표까지 예매해버렸다.
and eventually ended up booking a flight to Rome.
지금 생각해보면 진짜 잠깐 여자에 정신이 나갔던 것 같다.
Looking back now, I think I completely lost my mind for a moment because of a girl.
며칠 대화했다고 바로 비행기부터 끊는 걸 보면 말이다. 😂
I mean… booking a flight after just a few conversations? That says enough. 😂
근데 웃긴 건, 사실 예전에도 이런 비슷한 일이 몇 번 있었다.
But the funny thing is, this wasn’t even the first time something like this happened.
뭔가 마음이 움직이면 일단 행동부터 해버리는 스타일.
Whenever my heart moves, I tend to act first and think later.
아마 이게 그냥 내 성격인가 보다.
Maybe that’s just the kind of person I am.
유럽에서의 첫 여행.
My very first trip in Europe.
첫 목적지는 당연히 로마였다.
And of course, the first destination was Rome.
심지어 나는
I was so confident that
“무조건 만나겠지~”
“Of course we’ll meet anyway~”
라는 근거 없는 자신감으로
that with absolutely no logical reason,
라이언에어 취소 보험조차 들지 않았다.
I didn’t even buy cancellation insurance for the Ryanair ticket.
근데 사람 일은 진짜 모른다.
But honestly, you never know what’s going to happen in life.
여행 전 연락을 이어가던 중,
While we kept talking before the trip,
서로가 서로와 잘 맞지 않는다는 걸 느끼게 되었고
we both realized that we probably weren’t the right match for each other,
결국 약속은 깨졌다.
and eventually, the plan fell apart.
비행기 표는 이미 끊었고,
The flight was already booked,
환불도 안 되고,
there was no refund,
멘탈은 살짝 흔들렸지만…
and mentally, I was slightly devastated…
뭐 어쩌겠는가.
But well… what could I do?
그렇게 반강제로(?)
And that’s how, kind of unintentionally,
나의 첫 유럽 여행지는 이탈리아가 되었다. 🇮🇹
Italy became my very first travel destination in Europe. 🇮🇹
근데 결과적으로 말하면…
But honestly, in the end…
너무 좋았다.
It was incredible.
진짜 너무 좋았다.
Seriously, I loved it so much.
로마는 그냥 도시 자체가 영화였고,
Rome itself felt like a movie,
골목 하나, 노을 하나까지도 낭만이었다.
and every alleyway and sunset felt romantic.
게다가 이번 여행에서는 로마뿐 아니라
And during this trip, I didn’t only visit Rome,
이탈리아 북부까지 같이 다녀왔는데,
I also traveled around Northern Italy,
도시마다 분위기가 완전히 달라서 더 재미있었다.
and every city had a completely different vibe, which made the trip even more exciting.
“아, 왜 사람들이 이탈리아 이탈리아 하는지 알겠다.”
At some point, I finally understood why people are obsessed with Italy.
이 생각을 여행 내내 했던 것 같다.
I kept thinking that throughout the whole trip.
덕분에 이제는 다음 목표가 생겼다.
And thanks to this trip, I now have a new goal.
다음엔 꼭 남부 이탈리아 간다.
Next time, I’m definitely going to Southern Italy.
이번 여행은 진짜 에피소드도 많고,
This trip was full of unforgettable stories,
웃긴 일도 많고,
funny moments,
혼자라서 더 기억에 남는 순간들도 많았다.
and moments that became even more memorable because I was alone.
